Sumburgh Head stands at the southern most point of Shetland and is one of the most popular attractions on the islands. Prominent on the top of the Head is a 19th Century lighthouse designed by Robert Stephenson. The area is also well known for its wide variety of wildlife including seabirds, whales and dolphins.

In 2008 the Wolfson Foundation donated £300,000 to the Shetland Amenity Trust, an organisation set up to preserve Shetland's heritage. They undertook a major project to restore the lighthouse at Sumburgh Head and to create a new visitor centre. The centre, which opened in 2014, educates about the history of the lighthouse and the wildlife in the area. It therefore reflects the Foundation's interest in historic buildings and public engagement with science.
